Mr. Nasser Munjee

Mr. Nasser Munjee Educated in the UK and the US, my entire career has spanned the creation of financial institutions in India and an abiding interest in the problems of development in an emerging economy. My career began with the creation of the first mortgage company in India – the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) – with which I was associated for twenty years, rising to be its Executive Director. At the request of the Chairman of HDFC, I was asked to create a new institution on the lines of HDFC but this time for infrastructure finance as mortgage finance had come to be well established and the country now needed huge investments in infrastructure. I created the Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC) in joint partnership with government and both domestic and international institutions. I took over as Managing Director and CEO of the company. After seven years of its creation and successful operation, I resigned in protest as the government in power at the time attempted to nationalize the institution and subsume it into the State Bank of India.

After this experience, I decided to keep out of institutional management and use my experience in a number of different activities as advisor or non-executive director. I am presently on the Board of eight public companies in India, a few internationally and am involved with several other institutions as chairman, member of the board, or as a trustee.
